Pectin

Pectin is an indigestible carbohydrate, a structure polysaccharide that is contained in the cell walls of plant tissues.

It is made up of a linear chain of galacturonic acid monomers (held together by alpha-1-4 bonds) and is a soluble fiber with many diuretic virtues.

Placed in contact with water, it forms a gel forming a three-dimensional lattice between which meshes of water and other food substances remain trapped.

The gelling and emollient properties of pectin are very useful for regulating intestinal functions, increasing the consistency of the stool, promoting intestinal transit, giving greater softness to the faecal mass.

The intestinal metabolization of pectin by the resident bacterial flora, in addition to promoting the proliferation of beneficial germs and indirectly hindering that of pathogens, originates short-chain fatty acids, which nourish the intestinal mucosa and can decrease the values of LDL cholesterol as well as prevent colon cancer.

Pectin is present in the food supplement IMMUNOBIOTA (https://www.elisirlife.it/en/supplements/integratore-alimentare-immunobiota-48-cps.html
