FOLIC ACID
Folic acid is a vitamin.
It is essential to the man’s life since intervening in the synthesis of nucleic acids, it is in fact very important for cell growth and reproduction.
After being absorbed in the intestine, it is activated by the liver, which transforms it into folinic acid, distributes it to the various tissues or, possibly, deposits it as a reserve.
Folic acid and its derivatives participate in the synthesis of hemoglobin and some amino acids, such as methionine and glutamic acid.
They are very important for the growth, for the reproduction and for the good functioning of the nervous system.
Together with vitamin B12, with which it shares numerous functions, among which the most known antianemic, folic acid is one of the two most recent vitamins discovered.
Although the minimum requirement is largely covered by the simple intake of 150 grams of spinach or cress, folic acid deficiencies are quite common, especially in pregnant women and older people. Inadequate nutrition (low in fresh vegetables), but also some pathological conditions, can hinder the assimilation of vitamin.
The symptoms of deficiency are quite varied and include: apathy, tiredness, lack of appetite, mental and mnemonic difficulties, sleep disorders, ulcerations of the oral mucosa and macrotic and megaloblastic anaemia.
A folate deficiency can cause growth delays during childhood.
